Clementine Hunter, a self-taught Black folk artist, hailed from the Cane River area of Louisiana and resided and created her art on Melrose Plantation. Hunter was born into a Louisiana Creole family on Hidden Hill Plantation, situated near Cloutierville in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.
